We have our first international top model, and it is Donaldson Sackey. He gives plenty words of encouragement for aspiring models and/or for the big dreamers! Read the full interview to get a big piece of life advice!
(Fashion Odds)Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background? What are your professional and non-professional interests?
(Donaldson) My name is Donaldson. My origin is from Togo which is located in West Africa. However I grew up in Hamburg, Germany and I currently reside in London. I went to college and done my A-Level cause of my limited time. I’m a soccer player and a model. Doing both is a lot of work and filled with lots of fun. On top of that, I enjoy the two. I love to be creative in school because I don’t like standard; I get bored of it. I have always been into fashion, particularly putting my ideas on paper or designing my own clothes. I started deigning my own clothes since the age of 14.
(Fashion Odds) What made you first become a model and what type of modeling do you perform?
(Donaldson) I do high fashion male modeling, showroom modeling, and editorial modeling for different magazine. How I started is a funny story: one day I went to Hamburg to buy my soccer boots and somebody said he wanted me to model. He gave me his business card. But guess what? I never called him because it was a weird situation that happened to me for the first time. Two years later I headed to Hamburg and the same situation happened again and this time it was a Calvin Klein scout. He invited me to the casting and I went in and did well. Ever since then, my modeling career started to slowly form.
(Fashion Odds) How did you feel when you for your first fashion show or photo shoot?
(Donaldon) To be honest I wasn’t really nervous because I knew GOD prepared everything for me. I like to always think positive. I keep in mind that I go and rock the show. After all, we are all just human beings. I had a lot of fun; it was awesome.
(Fashion Odds) What work are you most proud of and why?
(Donaldon) I’m really proud of being a soccer player and model in general. They are gifts God gave to me and I am doing my best to be the best of both. Many people think that running behind a ball or just being a model behind the camera comes easy. Honestly, both take hard work. Modeling requires more than a pretty face. There are days you need to do a 10 hour-shoot and that is not easy at all. In contrast, you have soccer training everyday even if the weather is bad. I am proud of both, but I have not arrived yet to where I aim for.
(Fashion Odds) How does living in London influence your fashion and work?
(Donaldon) London influences me a lot in both works. Soccer in England is like a Religion because people go mad for it. On the fashion side, I love the vibe over here. There are so many different people, cultures and styles. I went to the Rihanna x River Island show and met celebrities like Rihanna, Tyson Beckford, Cara Delavigne. Sometimes I get featured in Magazine like ELLE or Men Style Fashion; it was an awesome experience.
(Fashion Odds) Any last words before a goodbye?
(Donaldson) If you have a dream, go for it no matter what. Always keep your goal in your mind. I can tell it is a hard way with lots of ups and downs. There are opportunities in which you feel that are blocked and you think that nothing is working out for you. So you say to yourself, “what is going on?” I will tell you, do not give up because at the point you start doubting your dreams, you will move far away from them. Prove those hard situations that nothing can put you down and work hard and you will begin to see things function correctly. I know those situations and GOD gives me a lot of strength. I started reading the Bible and understood His words. This is verse that inspires me a lot:
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded (2 Chronicles. 15:7)
My message is, work hard for your dreams and never give up.
